Wet joints on a cold morning, who actually waits for the frost to pass?

I was on a job in Columbus last week and the crew ahead of me was laying block at 7am with frost still on the pallets, and by noon the mortar was crumbling on the corners. My old foreman would have called that a rookie move, but some guys swear it's fine if you mix the sand hot enough. Anyone else here refuse to lay below freezing, or do you just roll with it and patch later?

Hot sand ain't helping when the frost is still in the block itself.
