Unpopular opinion: stop buttering the back of soldier courses and calling it weatherproofing
Had a guy on a job in Gary last month lay a whole soldier course with a buttered back and no flashing under it, and he told me the butter was "the seal." Water runs down that back joint, sits on the shelf angle, and finds the one spot with no weep hole, every single time, and I know because I've torn out three walls like that in five years. Am I wrong for making guys flash and weep every soldier course even when the drawings don't call it out?
