Thought the string line was a crutch until I tried it on a 40 foot garage wall in Tulsa

I always ran to my 4 foot level for anything longer than a doorway and figured the string was just for old timers who never learned better. Then my lead hand on a 40 foot garage wall in Tulsa made me run a line corner to corner and the difference in course height was about 3/8 of an inch over the whole run. What tool did you write off early on that you ended up going back to?
