Sitting out with a strained back, let's talk lifting safety

I was on a job last Tuesday and got careless picking up mortar bags. My back TWITCHED and I knew right away I messed up BAD. The pain shot down my leg and I could barely stand up straight for days. Turns out, I've been bending at the waist for years and my body finally said NO. I'm looking at light duty for a while, and it's KILLING me not to be on the wall. My chiropractor said this is super common for us and proper form is NOT optional. From now on, I'm committing to the squat lift every single time, no matter how tired I am. Do yourself a favor and really think about how you're picking things up before it happens to you.

Forget just the heavy loads for a sec. The real killer is when you get lazy with the light stuff day after day. Your brain goes on autopilot and you stop engaging your core without even noticing. That's how years of bending at the waist creep up on you. I started doing planks every morning to remind my body what proper bracing feels like. It's not about one perfect lift, it's about a thousand okay ones done right.

So are we all just trying not to throw our backs out picking up socks now? Tbh, it's kinda hilarious how much thought goes into not being lazy with light loads. Like betty_west40 said, catching yourself in the moment is key, but derekflores isn't wrong about the autopilot thing. Ngl, I've seen guys on sites who can lift heavy all day but strain something grabbing a tool off the ground. It's like your body betrays you when you stop paying attention for two seconds. Maybe the real trick is to just never relax, ever, which sounds terrible.

Yeah @wyatt513, but never relaxing... that just leads to more strain.

Planks never really clicked for me, they just feel like holding a position. Real life isn't a still pose. For me, it's about catching myself in the moment, like when I'm grabbing a full laundry basket off the floor. If I remember to squat down instead of just hinging over, that's the real win. Maybe it's about building the habit into the actual stuff you do, not just adding another exercise.

Ouch, I threw my back out grabbing a sock once, so @wyatt513 is totally right about this.
