Volcano method has never let me down. Keep it simple and just watch the consistency.

Was it a trick for getting the water to mortar ratio right without measuring? I've seen old timers do the "volcano" thing where they make a crater in the dry mix and pour in water slowly, but some guys swear by adding a splash of dish soap instead. Which method was it?
