I finally visited that old brick yard on Route 7

Saw a guy there using a butter knife to clean his trowel and it actually worked better than my wire brush, has anyone else tried that trick?

Butter knife trick is legit, been doing it for years after I stabbed myself with the wire brush one too many times. You gotta use the back of the blade though, the dull side, and scrape at a shallow angle so you don't gouge the metal. I also keep a cheap putty knife in my bucket for the same reason, works way better than any fancy tool I've bought. Wire brushes just push the crud around in my experience.

@mitchell.dakota is right about using the dull side, that really makes all the difference.
