Bought a used mortar mixer off Craigslist and thought I got scammed

Found a 5 cubic foot mortar mixer for $400 last spring from a guy in Akron. Turned out the engine just needed a carburetor cleaning and it runs like new. I was ready to write it off as junk but a buddy talked me into taking it apart. Anyone else score a good deal on used equipment that needed simple fixing?

Scammed" is a bit dramatic lol. You bought a used mixer from some guy on Craigslist for half the price of a new one, you knew it wasn't gonna be perfect. Carb cleaning is like the first thing you do with any small engine that sat around. Not really a "score" so much as basic common sense. I'm happy it worked out but acting like you dodged a bullet is a stretch.

Jumped into a similar situation with a used log splitter last year, @evah40 you're probably right that carb cleaning should be step one for any small engine that's been sitting. I found mine in a barn covered in dust and mouse droppings for $200. Guy said it "just needs a little work." Took me about an hour to clean the carb and replace a fuel line, and now it starts on the first pull every time. People give up way too QUICK on stuff that just needs basic maintenance. A little patience and a YouTube video can turn junk into a SOLID piece of equipment for cheap.
