Why does everyone say pothos are the easiest houseplant? Mine almost died twice in my Chicago apartment
I used to buy into the whole "pothos are foolproof" thing that everyone in every plant group repeats nonstop. Then I moved into a north-facing unit in Chicago two winters ago and watched my golden pothos drop leaf after yellow leaf until it was down to three sad stems. I had it sitting about four feet from the window because that's what every care guide says, but the light meter I finally bought showed it was getting less than 50 foot-candles there. Turns out my place gets almost no usable light from November through March, and pothos actually want way more than people admit. I moved it right up against the glass and within six weeks it pushed out five new leaves. Now I tell people pothos are easy in a bright house and miserable in a dark one, and they look at me like I'm crazy. Has anyone else had a "beginner" plant totally fail on them because of where they live?
