The neighbor who tried to prune my maple tree with hedge clippers

My neighbor across the street decided to give my 15-year-old sugar maple a 'haircut' last Tuesday while I was at work, hacking off 4-inch diameter branches with hedge clippers and leaving jagged stubs everywhere. I came home to find sap bleeding out of those cuts and bark ripped down the trunk from the weight of the branches tearing as they fell. How do you gently tell someone their 'help' just cost you a tree that might not recover for 3 seasons?

Man you gotta nip this in the bud right now. First thing is to take photos of all the damage before anything else, especially the bark tear and those jagged cuts. Then walk over and tell them straight up that hedge clippers are for bushes not trees, and that 4-inch limbs need a proper pruning saw with three cut method to avoid bark stripping. They probably have no clue that maple sap bleeding this time of year can attract borers and disease. Let them know it'll take three years of careful pruning and maybe some wound dressing just to get the tree back to healthy growth, and that next time they should just call you first.
