That $140 'self-watering' pot just slowly murdered my prized fiddle leaf

I trusted the fancy reservoir system to handle a 2 week trip to Portland and came back to root rot so bad the stem was mush, so does anyone actually find those pots worth it or should I just stick with my cheap terra cotta and a neighbor check-in?
