Switched from bagged potting mix to making my own after losing 3 tomato plants in one summer
I used to just grab whatever was on sale at the big box store until I lost 3 tomato plants in one summer to bad drainage and fungus gnats. Now I mix my own with peat, perlite, and compost from a local farm called Green Valley, and my seedlings actually survive the season. Has anyone else had better luck making their own soil mix?

Feel you on the fungus gnats, they drove me nuts with bagged soil too. Baking the compost is a smart move, I might try that next time since I had a few gnats pop up last spring. Sand sounds like a good call for drainage, I just rely on extra perlite but maybe I'm missing something.

And the fungus gnats are the worst part, they just never leave with bagged stuff. I started baking my compost before mixing it in to kill any eggs and that made a huge difference for me. Do you add any sand to help with drainage?
