Shoutout to the guy at the Denver plant swap last week who knew every fern by its Latin name

Honestly, three years ago I just liked having a few houseplants. But last month I started trying to learn the proper names for things, and seeing that guy talk about them with such passion was pretty cool. Has anyone else gotten really into the science side after starting with just the hobby?

That shift from just keeping plants alive to learning the real names is so real. I read this article about how knowing the genus helps you understand care better, like how all those peperomias have similar needs. It makes the hobby feel deeper. And chen.phoenix, I feel you on the quiet plant murder, but swaps are great for finding tougher varieties that survive our learning phases.

Wait, you guys have actual plant swaps? That's a thing? I just murder mine quietly at home and buy new ones at the grocery store.
