My sister thinks naming houseplants is silly, but I've had 'Frank' the fiddle leaf fig for 3 years now

Last week, I was telling her how Frank finally put out a new leaf after a rough winter, and she just laughed and said it was a waste of time. I mean, I started naming them when I lived in that tiny apartment in Tacoma, and it made me pay more attention to their care. But she says it's pointless and they're just decor. Has anyone else had this kind of talk with a friend or family member who doesn't get it?

My old roommate in Bellingham thought the same thing about my snake plant, Steve. Did your sister ever have a pet or something she named as a kid? I feel like it's the same basic idea of caring for a living thing.

Actually, naming them might be helping them stay healthy in a way nobody talks about. There's been research showing that plants respond to vibrations and even specific sound frequencies, so speaking to them regularly with their name could be giving them a subtle boost. Maybe your sister should try naming one of her own plants for a month and see if she notices a difference in how it grows?
