My barber in Tulsa told me my fern was "faking it" and now I keep staring at my shelf
I was getting a haircut last week and my barber noticed the little fern photo on my phone lock screen, then he laughed and said most ferns at big box stores are basically on life support before you even bring them home. He used to work at a nursery in Tulsa for 6 years and said the Boston ferns get shipped in peat that holds way too much water, so the roots rot while the leaves still look green for a couple weeks. I got home and checked my own fern and sure enough, the soil was soaked 2 inches down and one stem pulled right out with mushy black roots. So now I am wondering if I should repot it into a chunkier mix or just toss it and start over with a smaller one, has anyone saved a fern that was already rotting at the base?
Reminds me of when my buddy swore by this old guy at a farmers market who sold "miracle root powder" for his dying plants, turned out to be cinnamon. That fern might be toast anyway, but yanking it out and checking the roots is half the fun.
