Lost my 6 year old monstera to root rot after switching to a self watering pot in February
Back in February I moved my monstera into one of those self watering pots because I was going to be gone for 2 weeks in Orlando and figured it would be fine. Came home, leaves looked okay, but by April it was dropping 3 leaves a week and when I finally yanked it out the roots were brown mush past the top inch. Has anyone here had luck going back to plain terracotta after a self watering pot disaster, or should I just start over with a cutting?

Switch back to terracotta and you will be fine. Self watering pots are a TRAP for monsteras, they like to dry out between waterings and those pots keep the soil wet way too long. Chop the mushy roots off, let it callus for a day, and repot in terracotta with chunky soil. If the stem is still firm you can save it, no need to start over. Just don't water it for a week after repotting so it can settle.
