I finally figured out why my indoor ferns kept dying

I was watering them on a set schedule, like every Tuesday, but my apartment is super dry. I switched to just checking the soil with my finger every couple days, and now they're all putting out new fronds. How do you guys know when your plants are actually thirsty?
