Does a wildflower meadow really beat a classic lawn for bees? My yard says maybe not
Three years ago I tore out my front lawn in Columbus and planted a native wildflower mix, about 600 square feet. Last week I did a 10 minute count of bees on the meadow versus my neighbor's dandelion-filled grass patch. The lawn had twice the visitors, mostly honeybees, while mine had maybe a dozen bumblebees and some tiny flies. I get that diversity matters more than raw numbers, but it stings when the "boring" lawn wins on activity. Is there a real argument my meadow is still better for local pollinators, or did I fall for the eco trend? Anyone else compare their native planting to a regular yard that way?
