A groundskeeper at the Portland rose garden told me I was pruning wrong and now I can't stop thinking about it
I was at the International Rose Test Garden in Portland about 3 weeks ago and a groundskeeper stopped me while I was deadheading. He said my angle was off and I was cutting too close to the bud eye, and he showed me his way on a nearby shrub. Now here's the debate I keep having with myself: is it better to follow the old school strict rules like he does, or go with the newer advice that says roses are tougher than we think and you can be more relaxed? His bushes looked great, but I've seen wild roses in a friend's yard in Eugene that get zero care and they bloom like crazy too. I pruned 6 of my own plants his way and 6 my old way, and honestly the difference after 3 weeks is small. So what do you all think, do you stick to strict pruning rules or just let the plant do its thing?
