Two window displays in Portland, 6 weeks apart, same shop. Night and day.
Went past that indie spot on SE Division twice last month. First time the window had three stacks of books all facing the same way, a sad fern, and a handwritten sign that said 'staff picks' with no names. Looked like a storage closet. Second time, someone actually cared. There was a little crime scene tape around a true crime table, a note explaining why each pick was there, and the fern got moved next to a gardening section with a tiny trowel. Night and day. Did the manager swap out or did someone just finally get fed up? Has anyone else seen a shop flip like that and ever asked what changed?
Same thing happened at a bookshop I hit up in Tacoma a couple years back. First visit, the front display was just a pile of old bestsellers with a crooked sign that said "sale." Looked like they gave up. Rolled through six weeks later and the whole front window had a fishing theme going, waders on a mannequin, a cooler with ice packs, and a whole shelf of outdoor reads. Total 180. I actually asked the clerk what happened because it was so weird. She said the owner hired a girl who worked at a hardware store before and that girl just started messing with things on her lunch breaks. Nobody told her to do it, she just got fed up with the dead fern energy. Now she runs all their displays and that shop is always packed. Sometimes it just takes one person who cares enough to mess with the tape dispenser.
