I used to think indie shop windows stayed the same for months. Last Saturday I was killing time in Portland and this clerk at a spot on Hawthorne told me most owners swap their front display every 4 to 6 weeks to keep regulars looking. She said one store near her rotates on the first Monday of each month, so locals plan walks around it. That number stuck with me because I always assumed it was a seasonal thing, maybe 3 or 4 times a year. Now when I walk past a window that looks stale I wonder if the owner just got busy or ran out of ideas. Do the shops near you actually switch it up that often or is 6 weeks rare?
