Hot take: a clerk at Powell's in Portland told me to judge window displays by the backdrop first, not the books
Now I keep arguing with a friend about whether a themed window with five stacked copies of one title and a dusty prop shelf beats a plain display of ten mixed new releases, so which one actually makes you walk in?
Picture the clerk standing there like a window display sommelier, swirling a glass of dusty props. Five copies of the same book just tells me the manager lost a bet, while ten mixed new releases says somebody actually reads. Judge the backdrop all you want, but my wallet walks in for the books.
