If your window display needs a spoken explanation, is it actually working, or should they just put up a sign?
When my old shop did a closed for remodeling thing, we taped paper over the front windows and people still yanked on the door for a week straight. What finally worked was a big handwritten note taped at eye level that said closed, back on the 15th, in sharpie, plus a date. The tape alone just read as broken or shut down for good. So yeah, if you have to walk people through the joke, it is not landing. A display that needs a clerk standing there explaining it is just a confusing display.
