Rant: I thought fantasy was a waste of time til a coworker in Tulsa handed me her copy of The Hobbit
For years I skipped the whole fantasy shelf at the library. Swords and elves and made up maps felt like homework to me. Then a coworker in Tulsa put her beat up paperback on my desk 3 months ago and said just read 40 pages. I did it to be polite. By page 40 I was hooked. I finished it in 4 days and now I have 6 more fantasy books stacked by my bed. I was wrong about the whole genre. What book or genre did you swear off and then get proven wrong on?
We all do this with stuff we decide we hate before we even try it. I see it with food, music, whole types of people. Somebody decides sushi is gross or country music is dumb and they never once test the idea, they just keep saying it for years. Getting handed something by a real person who likes it cuts through all that in a way a review or a list never can. Your coworker didn't argue with you, she just gave you 40 pages and let the book do the work. That's a good trick for more than books.
