Rant: Everyone told me to push through the first 100 pages of this one and I gave up at page 60
I picked up a copy of Dune at a used store in Fresno for $3 and made it exactly 60 pages before I put it down for good. Three different people told me the first 100 pages are slow but it gets amazing, and I just kept thinking, why should I suffer through 100 pages of a book I'm not having fun with? I read for maybe 30 minutes a night after work, so that is almost a full week of my free time gone before the payoff even starts. Am I crazy here, or does the whole push through it thing only work for people who already like long fantasy? What page did you finally bail on it, if you tried at all?
Honestly your free time is too short to be miserable for a week just to get to the good part. Here's a tip though, and I'm only saying this because it saved Dune for me: skip to page 100. Like actually just flip there and start reading. The stuff you miss is mostly world building and weird names anyway, and the story makes sense without it. If you still aren't hooked by page 130 or so, then yeah, bail for good, and you only lost one night instead of seven. I've done this with like four books people swore I had to "push through" and it works more often than you'd think. Life's too short and there are too many good books that grab you on page one.
