My coworker told me to skip the first 100 pages of Moby Dick

She said the real story starts after the whale facts and I figured she read it so I listened. Got to page 50 and realized I missed a whole ship leaving port and had no clue what was going on. Has anyone else gotten bad advice like that from a trusted reader?

Actually skipping to chapter 22 ruins the entire whale ship introduction that sets up Ishmael's perspective.

Wait, you're telling me people actually read Moby Dick for the whale ship introductions and not just to say they finished it? I breezed through those early chapters so fast I think I missed the entire point of Ishmael's perspective anyway. But hey, whatever helps you sleep at night, book club hero.
