My book club swore by audiobooks for dense nonfiction, so I tried it on a 900 page history and now I remember almost nothing
Half of you will say I just picked the wrong book or speed, and the other half will say listening was never going to stick for something that dense, so which is it?
Ugh, yeah, dense nonfiction on audio is a trap for exactly this reason, you can follow the words fine but nothing sticks because your brain never has to stop and chew on anything. What worked for me was pairing the audio with something physical, even just keeping the book open to the chapter map or taking a few notes at each section break, and slowing it to like 1.25x max. Maybe it's just me but the book club advice only really holds up for stuff you're already somewhat familiar with, not a 900 pager you're learning cold.
