Hot take: I quit 3 books in a row at the 50 page mark and now I think that's a fine place to stop
Three years back I started keeping a list of books I dropped, and the pattern is clear: if I am not hooked by page 50, I never finish it anyway. Last month I tried The Goldfinch, made it to page 47, put it down, and felt zero guilt for once. Quitting early saves me about 8 hours per book, which adds up to a full week of reading time a year. Does anyone else have a hard page number where they just call it, or do you push further hoping it turns around?
