Got 200 pages into a fantasy series and realized I was reading book 3 instead of book 1

I grabbed "The Shadow of What Was Lost" from a used bin at McKays in Nashville because the cover looked cool, but plot made zero sense for like 3 weeks before I checked Goodreads. Turns out I started with the third book of a series and wasted 15 hours of my life. Has anyone else done this with a series and just couldn't go back to fix it?

Grabbed The Eye of the World from the library once cause someone said it was a good starting point for fantasy. Read the whole thing, thought it was pretty good but nothing special. Told my friend and he laughed so hard he nearly choked on his soda. Turns out I read book 11 of Wheel of Time by accident, not book 1. The library had it shelved wrong and I was too dumb to check. By the time I found out I was already 700 pages deep and just gave up on the whole series. Funny how one mistake can kill an entire author for you, right?

Start book one. It's worth the retread.

Ay @foster.dylan dead on, I did the same with a whole trilogy once and couldn't force myself back to book one either.
