Got 200 pages into a 900 page fantasy novel and realized I had no idea who half the characters were
So I finally sat down with this big epic fantasy book everyone raves about, right? 900 pages, maps in the front, the whole deal. I powered through 200 pages over about 3 weeks and kept telling myself it would click.
Then last Tuesday I was at the laundromat and someone asked what I was reading. I started explaining the plot and just... froze. I couldn't tell them a single character's name that I actually cared about. There were like 14 different POVs and 3 of them had names that were basically the same but with different vowels. I think I was confusing two brothers the entire time and one of them might be dead? Or maybe not.
That was the moment. I wasn't reading a story, I was memorizing a phone book with swords. Closed it for good right there next to the dryers.
What's the longest you pushed into a book before admitting you had no clue what was going on?
