Gave up on a 900 page fantasy novel 200 pages in because the author spent 40 of those pages describing a single breakfast
I picked it up in January after like 12 people told me it was the best thing they had ever read, and I pushed through 200 pages before I finally set it down for good. The story had maybe three things happen in all that time, and one whole chapter was just the main character buttering bread and thinking about his dead dad in the rain. Does anyone else bail when a book makes you do all the work, or do you just power through and hope it gets good around page 600?

40 pages on breakfast is wild. I once quit a book 500 pages in because I realized I had been hate reading it for a month and only kept going so I wouldn't feel dumb. My rule now is if I'm not hooked by page 100 it goes back to the library, life's too short for 900 pages of toast. Some of those doorstops do pay off eventually but man, they should come with a warning label.
