Why does nobody mention the dog at the end of Where the Red Fern Grows

I reread it last Tuesday in Toledo and bawled like a kid, but the real kicker was explaining to my coworker why I was a mess at my desk. Has anyone else had a grown-up reread hit way harder than the first time?
