The hospital waiting room copy of The Road is still on my nightstand
Sat with my dad for 11 days at St. Mary's in Reno while he was on the ventilator. Someone left a beat up paperback of The Road on the chair next to me, and I read the whole thing in two sittings between visiting hours. That book hit different when every beep from the monitor sounded like a countdown. Has anyone else had a book find them at the worst possible time and just wreck you for good?
Did you ever go back and try to read it again later? For me it was a copy of The Things They Carried that a nurse left in my mom's room when she was going through chemo. I got maybe 40 pages in over three weeks, just kept picking it up and putting it down. After she passed I couldn't touch it for almost two years. When I finally did, I read it in one night and it was like the book had been waiting for me to be ready. Still can't explain why that one stuck with me, but I keep it on the shelf with her stuff now.
