The $60 poetry collection that made me hate poetry, then love it again

I dropped $60 on a fancy hardcover from a small press in Portland because the cover was gorgeous. Every poem felt like it was trying too hard, all clever metaphors and no heart. I almost threw it in a donation bin last Tuesday, but then I read the last section about the author's mom and just broke down crying at my kitchen table. It wasn't the book that changed, it was me finally slowing down enough to listen. Has anyone else had a book that took three tries before it wrecked you?

Nowhere near 60, mine was $14 at a used shop, but same exact thing.
