That one chapter in Flowers for Algernon still haunts me years later

Man that chapter hit me like a truck too. The part where he starts forgetting things and he realizes he's losing the ability to read the same books he just finished understanding is brutal. I had to put the book down for a solid 20 minutes after the scene with the mouse Algernon. The way he writes about watching himself slide back into the darkness while still being aware enough to know it's happening is just cruel. It's one of those things that sticks with you because it makes you think about what makes a person who they are.

@iris_stone28 totally nailed it. That Algernon scene wrecked me too. Made me realize my memory's already going bad and I'm not even 30 yet. Forgot my own birthday last week. Had to check Facebook. We're all just scrambling to hold onto who we are.
