Spent 3 weeks stuck on page 47 of House of Leaves and finally figured out why
I sat in my kitchen in Sacramento at 2am, flashlight under the covers like a kid, flipping back and forth between two pages for 20 minutes before I got it, and now I need someone to tell me if I'm supposed to feel this unsettled or if I missed something bigger.
Oh man, been there. That book is designed to mess with you and page 47 is where it really starts doing it. The flip back and forth stuff is on purpose, you're supposed to feel lost and a little sick to your stomach. The trick I found is to stop trying to "solve" it and just let the pages wash over you, read the footnotes like they're part of the story instead of homework. If you're unsettled, that means it's working, Danielewski wanted you off balance. Just keep going and don't fight the weird layout, it gets worse in a good way.
