Rant: Overheard a book club say "sad endings are lazy writing" and it got under my skin
I was at a coffee shop last Saturday and this group of 5 people were talking about a novel I'd just finished, calling the tragic ending "cheap" and "lazy." It hit me hard because that book literally had me crying on my couch at 2 AM and it felt real, not like some trick. Has anyone else ever had someone dismiss a book that totally wrecked you like it was nothing?

Exactly. Stop caring what book club randos think.

Why are people so quick to call an ending "lazy" just because it didn't wrap up with a bow on it? That book hit me too, and the sad ending was the whole point. Life doesn't tie up neatly for most of us, so why should every story pretend it does? Those book club types probably never let a good cry ruin their day either. Your reaction to that book was real and valid, don't let five people in a coffee shop take that from you.
