My cheap trick for actually finishing a crying book on a plane without looking like a mess

I was reading 'The Art of Racing in the Rain' on a flight to Chicago last month and got to the super sad dog part. I remembered this trick I saw online where you pinch the bridge of your nose and breathe slow to stop tears from spilling. It actually worked for me through the roughest chapters, though I still looked like a weirdo with my fingers clamped on my face for 20 minutes. Has anyone else tried that nose pinch thing or got a better method for public crying?

Wait does the nose pinch actually work? My friend tried holding her breath on a flight and just choked on her own snot.
