Audiobook at 1.25x speed got me through a book I'd quit twice

I tried reading 'The Overstory' three times over two years and always stalled around page 150. My problem was the slow pacing and too many characters to keep straight. Last month I borrowed the audiobook from the library and set it to 1.25x speed during my commute to work in Cleveland. That small bump kept my attention locked without losing the voice, and I finally finished it in 11 days. Has anyone else found an unusual setting or format that cracked open a book you'd given up on?

Whoa, 1.25x is such a small change but it totally makes sense. I heard a writer on a podcast say she does this thing where she reads the first 50 pages out loud to herself, and it slows her brain down just enough to get hooked before she switches back to silent reading. She said it works best for books with a lot of characters because hearing the names helps them stick. Might be worth a shot for the next one that stalls on you.
