A poetry collection I bought for a class assignment hit harder than any novel this year
I had to pick a book for a lit requirement and grabbed 'Citizen' by Claudia Rankine because it was short. I figured poetry would be a slog, something to skim and return. Instead I read the whole thing in one sitting at a coffee shop on 5th Street, and by the end I just sat there staring at the wall for maybe 20 minutes. The way it mixes everyday racism with these tiny, sharp moments made me feel sick in a way no thriller has managed. I've never been someone who tears up over books, but this one left me numb and angry at the same time. It made me realize I'd been avoiding harder reads because I thought they wouldn't hit me. Has anyone else had a random class pick completely wreck them, or was it just me?
That part about sitting there staring at the wall for 20 minutes is so real, some books just leave you stuck like that. I had a similar thing happen with a random short story collection I picked for a class, thought it would be easy filler and instead I could not stop thinking about it for days. It is not just you, those surprise hits are the ones that stick with you the longest.
