A beta reader's one sentence made me rewrite my whole outline
I handed my draft to a friend in my writing group and she said, "your main character has no skin in the game until page 80." That hit hard because she was right, the stakes were all background noise and nothing personal. I spent the next 3 weeks at a coffee shop on Belmont Ave rebreaking the story so the loss happens in chapter one, not halfway through. Now I check every scene against that question before I write it, it saves me from a fake emotional arc. Has anyone else gotten feedback so sharp it made you scrap months of work?

Wait, how do you know the new stakes are actually personal and not just louder?
