Wasted $45 on a cheap guillotine paper cutter from an online auction - do not make my mistake.

The blade went dull after 15 cuts and now it just tears the edges instead of slicing clean, has anyone found a decent entry level cutter that won't break the bank but actually works for bookbinding?

My buddy Rick bought the same type of thing from a local thrift store for like 15 bucks. He was so proud of it until he tried to cut a stack of 20 pages for his zine and the blade just stopped halfway through. He ended up spending more time trying to fix it than if he just bought something decent from the start. I think he eventually got a Dahle 12 inch rotary trimmer on sale for maybe 50 and he still uses it years later. So yeah, those cheap ones are a gamble for sure.

Disagree completely. Found that cheap guillotine cutters work fine if you take the time to sharpen the blade yourself with a fine stone before the first use. Maybe your auction find was just a dud, but I've had a $30 one last me through hundreds of cuts by going slow and not forcing it.
