Tried stitching with a saddler's awl instead of my usual sewing frame

I've always used a frame for historical binding but picked up an awl last week for a quick repair on a 1920s novel and the control was way better for tight spaces. Anyone else switch up their stitching method and find something that works better for certain books?

You ever find yourself in a bind where you suddenly feel like a total rookie with a tool you thought you knew? @victor_carr54 probably gets it... I tried a saddler's awl once and ended up with more holes in my thumb than the book spine.

Yeah I grabbed an awl for an 1880s binding and never looked back.

A little dramatic for a hand tool, don't you think?
