Spent 2 hours redoing a headband on a single book and finally got it right

I've been working on rebinding an old copy of Dune for my brother and kept messing up the headband tension. Tried watching a bunch of tutorials, but what finally worked was gluing the headband to a piece of scrap paper first to hold it steady before attaching it to the spine. Has anyone else tried that trick or do you have a better method for keeping headbands from slipping?

That scrap paper trick is actually pretty clever, never seen anyone do it that way. I've been binding for about 6 years now and headbands are still the part that makes me want to throw the book across the room. @faith_price7 that dog feet comment is too real, feels like we're all just slipping around in the dark with this stuff. So question for you - did you use PVA glue for that paper trick or something like wheat paste? I wonder if the glue type makes a difference for how well it holds the headband steady while you're working.

More slip ups than a dogs feet on a freshly waxed floor.
