Shoutout to the old guy at the bindery in Sacramento who showed me how to tap a signature flat
About six months ago I was at a small bindery shop in Sacramento picking up some linen thread and I had a stack of signatures for a rebind that would not line up no matter what I did. An older fellow there, must have been in his 70s, watched me fuss with them for a minute and then just walked over and said "stop squeezing them, let the fold drop." He took my stack, held it by the spine edge and tapped the whole thing flat on the table maybe 4 or 5 times, then fanned it back out. Lined up perfect in about 10 seconds. Turns out I was gripping them so tight I was pushing the folds out of square, and he could see it from across the room. He didn't charge me a dime and wouldn't even take a coffee. I've done it his way on every book since and my sewing stations sit way cleaner now. Anyone else pick up a trick like that from someone watching over your shoulder?
