Serious question, has anyone else tried using a hair straightener to press book cloth?

I was in a real bind yesterday with a custom order due today and my regular press was acting up, so I grabbed my wife's flat iron from the bathroom. The results were actually pretty good for the small piece I needed, but the smell of hot hair product mixed with book glue is something I can't forget. What's the weirdest tool you've had to use in a pinch?

A clothes iron works in a pinch too.

Oh totally, but a clothes iron can really mess with the non-stick coating on your panini press if you're not careful. I mean, the press is designed for even heat and that heavy top lid to get those grill marks just right. An iron just doesn't have the same weight distribution, so you end up with a squished sandwich but maybe not the same crunch on the bread. Plus, you have to worry about steam holes and temperature settings on the iron, which is just asking for a burnt hand or a weird smell in your kitchen.
