Pro tip: stop rounding your spines before the glue is fully dry
I rushed a batch of 12 hardcover journals for a craft fair in Ann Arbor last month and rounded all the spines about 20 minutes after gluing up. By morning, 7 of them had cracked hinges and a wave you could see from across the table. My mentor Doris watched me panicking at her shop on State Street and just said, 'The glue tells you when it's ready, not the clock.' Now I let them sit a full overnight under weight, no exceptions, even when a deadline is breathing down my neck. Anybody got a humidity trick for drying faster in a cold basement, or do I just need to be patient like Doris says?
