Kept hearing about wheat paste for spine repairs, figured it was just a cheap gimmick until I tried it on a 1930s cookbook last week
My old mentor in Baltimore always swore by PVA and nothing else, so when a guy at the bindery swap in Philly handed me a jar of his homemade wheat paste I smiled and put it on the shelf. Last week the hinges on a 1930s cookbook were so dry and cracked that PVA felt like it would just sit on top and flake off in a month. I brushed on the wheat paste, set it under a board for two days, and the thing flexed like new without a single hard spot. Ngl I've used it on three more repairs since, and now I feel a little dumb about that jar sitting there for 8 months. Anyone else mix their own, and what ratio do you use so it doesn't go sour on you?
