Appreciation post: the 78 year old book repair lady at the Chicago show who uses wheat paste and nothing else
I was at the Midwest book arts show in Chicago back in April and spent 20 minutes watching this older woman named Ruth fix a torn spine with just wheat paste, a bone folder, and a scrap of Japanese tissue. She told me she has been doing it that way for 51 years and has never once reached for PVA on an antique, because the paste stays reversible and the book can always be taken apart again by whoever comes after her. Made me wonder how many of my own repairs from 5 years ago are still cleanly reversible, so what do you all use when a customer brings in a 150 year old book?
