PSA: the guy at a library sale in Dayton who marked a first edition at $2 because it had a cracked spine
I keep hearing people in this group say condition is everything, but I don't buy it. Six months ago at a library sale in Dayton, I watched a volunteer flip open a 1947 hardcover and knock it down to $2 just because the spine had a crack and a water stain on the back board. He said it wasn't worth shelf space, so I handed him two singles and walked out with it. That copy is a first printing of a book I'd been hunting for three years, and the boards and text block are still tight. I get wanting clean copies, but this push to only buy perfect condition means stuff like this gets sent to the recycle bin. How many of you have pulled a solid reading copy out of a buck box that everyone else passed on because of a little wear?
