PSA: that $1 yard sale paperback pile is not the deal you think it is

I keep seeing folks brag about hauling 40 books for $20 from a garage sale in Beaverton last Saturday, but half those spines were cracked and one of mine had mold spots by week two. I spent $30 at an estate sale instead and got 6 hardcovers that were actually readable, so cheaper per pile does not mean cheaper per book you can keep. What is your cutoff for condition when the price is basically free?
